Our five-year MEng Mechanical Engineering degree course begins with two years of intensive core study, giving you a thorough understanding of a wide range of engineering disciplines. The third year is spent on an industrial placement, ensuring you can put your extensive subject knowledge into practice, and increasing your employability once you graduate. Having built a strong foundation in engineering, your fourth and fifth years of study will be largely made up of optional modules. This allows you to develop a specialism, focus on areas of interest and engage with cutting edge research activities.
You can expect a course with a balance between theory and practice, and to spend time in the laboratory looking at thermofluids, materials, mechanics, dynamics, stress analysis and design. Where traditional undergraduate courses are lecture-based, ours emphasise the development of skills required by a modern engineer: imagination, creativity, intellectual agility and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is strongly engaged with industry and home to specialist equipment, ensuring you complete your studies well equipped to begin your career.
